Coffeehouse and Open Reading was a success with about 20 people attending, including students, alums, faculty and friends.

Thanks to all who attended, read, listened, and contributed. Thanks especially to Amy Thompson and Nanette Tamer for bringing coffee cake and donuts and to Dawn Jefferies and Alison Amato for bringing coffee. Also to Amy Thompson for sending emails.

The possibility of a reading on the evening of Wednesday, October 8 from 6-8 pm was discussed. Planning should be started ASAP to insure readers and audience. Ann Sosnowski, who graduated last year, is around and said she would like to come and would be willing to read. Joel Griffith has also sent in some submissions. It is possible to put something together for current Spectrum members and alums that would be interesting to others but it will need immediate planning. Thus, this reading might be moved to a later date.

On Thursday, November 13 at 12:00 p.m., mystery writer Laura Lippman will be reading at the Exchange. Diane DiSalvo is very interested in having Spectrum support this event. She especially needs help getting people interested. There will be a book signing and light lunch following the reading at which Spectrum members will be welcome. The book store will have copies of her books. This looks like a great project for Spectrum’s crew. Diane has done much of the preparation, the job of Spectrum’s members would be to attract an audience to this event through publicity and word-of-mouth.

Minutes from September 10, 2003

  • Spectrum will attempt to become an official club with the Student Life Association. De’Anne Roye volunteered to get and complete the application.
  • In addition to the regular meeting/readings, we would like to hold two public reading/coffeehouses. For these we will try to fnd a local poet to come and read for 20 to 30 minutes. Others from campus will also be able to read.
  • All meetings will be informal readings where people can bring what they are working on and read it. Someone will bring light refreshments–cookies or something. People can bring their own drinks. We will publicize these readings and everyone will be welcome to come and read. Scholarship hours will be given.
  • The First Reading date will be Wednesday, October 8 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. We thought this time would attract some who would be on campus for evening classes. This reading will be both our social event and our fundraiser. We will ask for a donation at the door to cover refreshments and to pay an honorarium for the poet who comes to read. The English department may also be able to contribute for the honorarium. For these event we’ll need the following:
    • Someone to find a reader. Alison Amato will talk with Laura Orem. Others will try to think of someone to ask.
    • Someone toorganize publicity.
    • Someone to organize food and refreshments.
  • We also talked about editing and producing Spectrum. Justine Trainor, Floria Volynskaya, and Amy Thompson as well as some others are interested in editing. When the time comes we will need lots of help with this. We also need everyone to help encourage people to submit their work.
  • Sherree Streety volunteered to help with membership and reminding people of meetings. Alison Amato and De’Anne Royce will help with the coffeehouses and fundraising.
  • We will get volunteers for more of these activities and finalize the decision for co-editors of Spectrum at the next meeting.
